We flew to Berlin Thursday evening and woke up bright and early on Friday morning in our gorgeous Air BnB apartment ready for a full day of exploring and on some serious man-hunt for some currywurst and a beer!
We stayed in the heart of Kreuzberg and after a quick pit-stop at Lamuri for some coffee and eggs, we headed to the East Side Gallery along the river to check out the famous artwork running along the east side of the Berlin wall.
I'd been desperate to visit the East Side Gallery for months and I gotta say, it exceeded my expectations. It was captivating to see something which had evolved from what could be considered as one of the most dismal tool of entrapment into something which acts as a blank canvas for artists to challenge the social norms and values of today.
My favourite mural was definitely the most iconic and infamous 'Stolen Kiss' of communist dictators Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker kissing on the lips. One ticked off that ever growing bucket list of mine.
After a stroll along the river and a quick dash back to the apartment to change into some Summer clothes as we had totally underestimated the weather, we attempted to suss out the metro (bloody impossible) and headed to Wittenbergplatz.
We'd planned to hop on the sightseeing bus at Wittenbergplatz to suss out the city as it is blimming ginormous and definitely not walkable in one day, but due to our diabolical time planning, it was too late in the day to get one oops, so we decided to do what we do best instead...and go shopping.
After tracking down a Currywurst and the Birkenstock store (priorities), we spent the rest of the day strolling down Kleiststraße Street & Tauentzienstraße Street, trying not to spend all my euros in the ginormous Zara! (You can take the girl out of London...)
Home of KaDeWe - Berlin's equivalent of Selfridges and huge stores such as Forever 21 and KIKO, if you fancy a bit of shopping in Berlin, Wittenbergplatz is the place to be...
After a jam-packed first day, we headed back to the apartment to get ourselves dolled up for a night out in Kreuzberg. A pretty successful first day...
Read on for Part 2....
xoxo
